U.S. Skipped Salmonella Vaccine
More than ten years ago a massive egg-borne salmonella crisis struck the United Kingdom, sickening thousands of people. In response the British government mandated a program to vaccinate chickens against the disease. Salmonella poisoning from contaminated eggs has been all but wiped out in Britain as a result.

A few months ago the U.S. Food and Drug Administration introduced new egg safety guidelines. While the guidelines call for routine inspection of production facilities to ensure that they are free of contamination, there are no requirements that chickens be vaccinated against salmonella. The FDA said at the time that there was not enough evidence to suggest that vaccinating chickens would actually prevent people from getting sick.

Controlling Bleeding in the Field

Controlling bleeding in the field is perhaps one of the most critical elements of tactical first aid. When help is potentially hours away rather than minutes every injury must be evaluated, treated and managed as being potentially life threatening. Blood loss resulting from trauma is at or near the top of the last of things that require this kind of thorough management.

Typically traumatic injury resulting in significant blood loss occurs in the extremities, i.e. in an arm or a leg. Head injuries can and will bleed profusely, however open head wounds fall into a different category of assessment and treatment and will be dealt with more explicitly in a future discussion. The same is true for injuries to the body's core, or trunk.

Plane Crash Survival: Part 1

This week has seen two plane crashes in Alaska. The more reported of the two claimed the life of former Senator Ted Stevens and four others when their floatplane crashed into the side of a mountain en route to a salmon fishing camp. Four other passengers survived the crash and were rescued after an overnight ordeal in which rescuers, hampered by terrain and weather, were forced to stop for the night prior to hiking into the crash site.

Hyperthermia – Heat Related Illness

In most of the United States as well as equatorial and tropical regions around the world summer brings an increased risk of heat related illness, known as hyperthermia. There are fundamentally three types of hyperthermia to be aware of – heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Knowing how to recognize the signs and symptoms of each as well as knowing what to do when you or someone near you is stricken can save lives.

Some people are more prone to suffering heat related illness when the temperatures begin to soar. Special attention should be paid to:
