After gazing at a crystal ball no doubt funded with the sale of a Jeep Grand Cherokee or two, Clint Eastwood assessed the American landscape last Sunday evening before a captive audience, and prior to Giselle’s “Dirty Harry” like incrimination of Wes Welker.

“Halftime,” was the call from the former mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California (which is seldom confused with Detroit), of not just the game, but of America. Leaving aside Clint’s implied prediction of America’s demise around the year 2250, let’s focus on the prospects of an American turnaround.

Looming Hyperinflation?

The major concern in financial markets today is whether prices in the aggregate will decline. While seemingly innocuous, deflation can wreak havoc on those who have borrowed heavily to purchase assets. In order to prevent such an unpleasant situation, Chairman Bernanke has aggressively pursued measures to not only arrest any decline in the price level but to encourage a gentle, continued increase (referred to as inflation).

Any shortlist of the most feared intelligence organizations since World War II would include the Korean CIA, Iran’s Savak, the Mossad and the NKVD. While Pakistan’s Directorate for Inter-services Intelligence (ISI) might not be on that shortlist, it nonetheless has had great capacity for geopolitical mischief throughout its history.

The bond market is mostly unchanged with the curve having reached tac-preps' target of 3.0% (2-30yr yield difference). Most of the buying centers on - you guessed it - jobs and the double dip scenario.

Today we have GDP, consumption, confidence numbers and Fed Chairman Bernanke speaking. The day could be really choppy with lots of give and take between real money ivestors and fast money guys.

New York gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio distanced himself from the delicately tolerant New York political crowd the other day by speaking out against the proposed Cordoba House complex on Park Place in Manhattan. Lazio labeled Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the man behind the Cordoba initiative, "a terrorist sympathizer" and demanded to know "where the funding (was) coming from" speaking of the estimated $100 million price tag of the proposed Islamic mosque and cultural center.
